As we conduct “open heart surgery” on many of our cities, what lessons can Parramatta, Fisherman’s Bend and New York’s Times Square share?
“Great experiences are authentic experiences,” said Rebecca Grasso, the City of Parramatta’s director of city identity, experience and engagement. Understand your city’s unique characteristics and capitalise on those, Grasso advised.
“Data matters,” said Arup’s associate of city strategy and planning Australasia, Georgia Vitale. “Have a strong evidence base and make the case for change.”
Rethink stakeholder engagement, advised Meredith Sussex AM, chair of the ministerial advisory committee advising on the development of Fishermans Bend in Melbourne.
“It’s not how you do it, it’s the attitude you take to it. By talking to the widest possible range of people, we’ll plan better. When you go in with that attitude, people are enormously responsive.”
